About Us

Austrian designer Josef Puehringer founded The Crystal Cave in 1969 in the Village of Wilmette, Illinois, located along Chicago’s North Shore.  Josef studied with some of the world’s most prestigious glass artisans in Europe.  He came to America bringing their knowledge with him.

In 2012 Josef moved his operation to Glenview, IL, so he could incorporate the latest technology including surface lasers, sub-surface lasers, sandblasting and fragile glass repair.  Using these techniques he is able to literally paint portraits within the framework of a crystal block.

The awards he creates have been commissioned by The Chicago Film Critics and are proudly displayed in many of Hollywood’s most prestigious actors’ homes.  The long list includes Paul Newman, Kevin Spacey, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg and James Earl Jones.  Roger Ebert was among the critics who handed them across the stage.

The USO has been a long-time client honoring patriots like Gary Sinise for their tireless contributions.  Josef has donated hundreds of pieces that benefitted not only the USO but also the Salvation Army, the Hurricane Katrina Fund and the Tsunami in Japan. Josef has also supported numerous fundraising events.

Country clubs, schools and universities, non-profit organizations and clubs have all worked with The Crystal Cave designers to recognize outstanding members with a commemorative personalized piece.

Corporate clients number in the thousands.  Law firms award “tombstones” to outstanding attorneys with a Crystal Cave personalized recognition.  Political campaigns use The Crystal Cave to create thank you gifts for their volunteers.  Fund-raising galas have used pieces as favors.

The Crystal Cave is ready to create a exceptional, inimitable work of distinctive art for your next occasion.  Browse the site for ideas and let our designers be your guide to the most memorable gift imaginable.

We create memories in crystal.
